Professor Michael Sheringham FBA (1948-2016)

From 1995 to 2004, Michael worked at Royal Holloway, joining the Department of French as Professor of French, and going on to become the Head of French. While at the College, he wrote what was to become a groundbreaking and influential book, Everyday Life: Theories and Practices from Surrealism to the Present. Michael left Royal Holloway in 2004 to take up the highly prestigious Marshal Foch Chair of French Literature at Oxford. He will be remembered as one of the foremost scholars of his generation, as an energetic and supportive colleague and as a hugely likeable person with a warm sense of humour.
