Mr Derek Brown (1938-2015)

Physics department (1967-2000), Royal Holloway College and RHBNC

Derek Brown, who died on 18 May 2015, was a member of the College for over 33 years. In 1967, he joined the Physics department as a lecturer. His main research interest was plasma physics – in particular, plasma diagnostics for nuclear fusion via magnetic and inertial fusion. Much of this research was conducted collaboratively at major national facilities, notably the SERC’s Rutherford Laboratory, on projects such as the Joint European Torus aimed at generating energy from nuclear fusion using lasers.
These interests informed and innovated much of his teaching, in which he developed plasma physics as an undergraduate topic, in addition to specialist material for postgraduates.
