Two Earth Sciences alumni, Professors Xu Yigang (CAS Guangzhou) and Zhang Hongfu (Northwest University, Xi’an) have been elected as Academicians to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the highest professional accolade in Chinese science.
Yigang & Hongfu were both PGs with Professor Martin Menzies in Earth Sciences at Royal Holloway in the 1990s. Prof Menzies examined Xu Yigang’s thesis at Univ Paris II and afterwards he came to Royal Holloway as a Royal Society post-doc. Zhang Hongfu (Northwest Univ Xi’an) was awarded a K.C.Wong/ORS scholarship and completed a three year PhD at Royal Holloway. Both researchers worked on aspects of mantle geochemistry in eastern China & South Africa.
After returning to China their careers flourished and today Prof Xu Yigang is director of the CAS-GIG in Guangzhou (Canton) and Prof Zhang Hongfu is at Northwest University, Xi’an. Research collaboration began in 1994 and continues to this day with the RHUL- CAS/GIG joint doctoral training program.
We are very proud of their achievements, their dedication to our science and the pivotal role Royal Holloway played in their early careers.
